What Are Hidden Object Games?

Let me set the scenario for you. You are sitting at home bored out of your ever loving mind. There is nothing on the 140 billion channels offered on satellite, so you go to the computer. You get online looking for something interesting to do. There is nothing new on the user loaded videos and the funny pictures of cute little animals are just not making you laugh today. You have checked your website, your friends’ sites, and your appointment book but are still bored stiff. Then it dawns on you. You need to play some computer games! You do a quick search for online games and you see hidden object games, but what are hidden object games?

The basic premise for hidden object games is exactly as it sounds. The player looks for hidden pictures or objects. It can be like finding a well camouflaged person in the large crowd of people. Sometimes it is spotting what is different in two pictures that are almost exactly alike. There are even hidden object games that have you looking for several tiny clues leading you to solve great mysteries. The common aspect of all these games is you must find the hidden picture, objects or clues to advance to the next level of game play.

The majority of hidden object games can be broken down into three major categories: Hidden Picture games, Hidden Clue Games, and Seek and Find Games.

Hidden Picture Games:

Hidden picture games are similar to the ones you find in magazines. Remember the Highlight magazine? Every issue had a hidden picture game. Online or computer versions have you click the picture once you find it. Then the item is crossed off a list of objects hidden in the picture. Be careful! These games may not sound interesting, but you would be wrong. Hidden picture games can be very addicting.

Hidden Clue Games:

The board game Clue is one version of a hidden clue game. The crime scene investigation (CSI) shows are televisions shows that are all about the hidden clues. Now you can play games like this online or download them and play them on your computer. Do you like mystery or who-done-it? You can play it on your computer too. These games not only have you looking for hidden clues, but they have you thinking too. You can spend hours solving murders, searching lost cities, or a number of other investigations.

Seek and Find Games:

Seek and find games are not like hidden clue games because instead of solving a case you are searching places for objects leading you to a destination or to discover a secret. Games like this resemble your search the world for hidden treasures. While the hidden treasures may take you around the world, the hidden treasures may be in your own house. The hidden objects may lead you to discover an ancient world or an old family secret.

Hidden Object Games: Not Just For Kids

Have you ever wondered why people play games on their computer? Have you seen or heard people talking about hidden object games and wondered why do they bother? After all, aren’t hidden object games for kids? You probably have given your own kids hidden object games to keep them busy in the car or at the doctor’s office. Why on earth would you want to play kiddy games on the computer? Better yet, why would you waste your time and money playing them? I will give you one good reason. They are fun and challenging. Okay, so that is two but who’s counting.

The hidden object games you find online are not the games your kids play. The online games are complex story lines filled with challenging scenarios. The crime scene games have you using tools to find objects, and the matching is unlike anything you will see in a children’s game. The exploration games have you searching for rare items in places you may not have been aware existed. On top of strange places, the exploration games will broaden your vocabulary with words like Anubis. In some games, the hidden objects are so well disguised that grown adults will be tempted to ask for a hint.

The enjoyment and satisfaction you receive from playing hidden object games may surprise you. I know. You are thinking, “It is just clicking objects they hid. How could that possibly be satisfying?” Frankly, you get a rush from finding that object that is really well hidden. When the time is ticking down and you have one item left to find, your heart starts to race. Your mind starts to panic. You start worrying if you will find it in time. Then, just as the time is about to run out, you spot it! The simple pleasure of finding that last item will make you smile every time.

The best reason to play is to get a well deserved break from your day. It doesn’t take a lot of time or dedication to play hidden object games. Some games require you to dedicate tons of time to accomplish anything, but not hidden object games. You can play a quick game while the kids nap, waiting on dinner, or to relax a bit before bed. I wouldn’t exactly recommend playing before going to bed. If you do, you may find yourself up way past your bedtime trying to solve just one more puzzle.

Check out the games for yourself. See how fun hidden object games can be by going to Marco Polo Games. There you can read descriptions of games. Find a game that suits your interest. Then download the game for a free trial. After playing the game for awhile, you have the option of purchasing the game. So really, you have nothing to lose.

Hidden Object Games Review: Paranormal Agency

Paranormal Agency is a typical hidden object game. You look for hidden objects in order to advance to the next level in the game. In Paranormal Agency, the hidden objects can come in the form of outlines to match, words, or a theme.  The themes can be anything from light sources to ghosts.

Paranormal Agency is very standard. For those who think that hidden object games are too complicated then this is the perfect game for you. The game does not offer all the bells and whistles of the fancier games. It does offer a basic hidden object game without taking up a lot of memory. The file size is about 30MB. This is about a third of the fancier games.

The game begins by Heather Williams calling a paranormal specialist. Apparently, a child has been taken by a ghost. The investigator comes and after the first hidden object search, the investigator says the child is still there. A few searches later, and the child is found and Heather Williams is left with a piece of the ghost. She now has ESP and starts a career in paranormal science. Years pass and the investigator dies. The investigator left his business to Heather. Now she is searching on her own.

Paranormal Agency is supposed to take you on a spooky adventure. Unfortunately, it falls flat. While the graphics are good, they fall short of being scary or even creepy. The dialogue lacks appeal.  Luckily you can skip the dialogue. The game play isn’t bad though. If you are looking for a straight forward hidden object game, this will be right up your alley.

Each scene has you searching for a different amount of hidden objects. Like many hidden object games, the list contains about 5 items at a time. When you find one item, the item disappears from the list and new ones appear until you are down to the last few items. This game has one of my favorite features: the disappearing item. I like it when a game has the item disappear after you find it. I find it makes searching easier because it decreases the clutter.

Paranormal Agency does offer mini-games throughout the game. One mini-game has you detangle thread. Not quite sure of the point, but none-the-less it is an interesting puzzle. Another one of the mini-games is a spot the difference game.  Personally, I love spot the difference games and this one does not let you down. The screen is split in half has arrows on both sides for easy clicking on the differences.

You can find Paranormal Agency at Marco Polo Games. You can try the game for an hour for free. That gives you more than enough time to decide if you like the game or not. If you like it great! You can buy it from the site. If not then there are hundreds of other games to try for free. It won’t take you long to find a hidden object game that is perfect for you at Marco Polo Games.

Why Do People Play Hidden Object Games?

Surely, you have seen hidden object games. They are found in the newspaper, magazines, books, and even online. You have probably picked one up and wondered why people are attracted to these games. After all, hidden object games look tedious and mind-numbingly boring, right? Well, nothing could be further from the truth. These games have a legion of dedicated followers. The dedicated followers play the games regularly because they want the excitement of finding that which is hidden.

There is a secret society out there full of adults playing video games online, in their homes and sometimes at work. The grown adults are not dorks. They are not nerds. They are normal people who just like kicking back and having some fun. I must admit. I am a member of this secret society. After a long day of work, I come home and I search for hidden objects, solve murders, and explore lost cities. That is right. I like hidden object games. I play them online and I download them on my computer. In the doctor’s office, if no one is looking, I will search for hidden pictures in the children’s magazines.

Message boards and forums are filled with people, like you and me, discussing the latest hidden object game. The members share tips for game play, techniques (or cheats) for unlocking levels, and ideas for new games. They even help each other out when someone gets stuck on a level. Everything you ever wanted to know about your favorite hidden object game can be found in these game forums. The members are even kind enough to post SPOILER in the topic to warn people about information they may not want to know.

Oh yeah! It can become an obsession. The games suck you in and you are compelled to find one more clue before you call it a night. Oh my goodness, if for some reason you cannot find the clue, you might find yourself dreaming about the game. Next thing you know, you are eating lunch and BAM! You got it. You can’t wait till you get home to put in the answer.

No matter what people say or think, there is an adrenaline rush from solving the problem. That’s right. I said it. After spending days trying to solve a murder or meticulously searching a deserted tomb, you put the pieces together and the cut-scene (a mini-movie) comes and takes you to the next level. You find yourself beaming. The pride that comes from solving a case is astounding. Who knew you could get such a rush from playing a game in the safety of your own home, but there you are filled with pride and accomplishment.
